The background Young people from all over the world gather to celebrate their faith with the Pope, at the foot of the Cross, and they form the crown of the Virgin of Almudena, patroness of Madrid. Prominent in the crown is the "M" for Mary, also the initial of Madrid, the venue of the meeting. The Cross, sign of Christianity, presides over the meeting of the Pope with young people, who with their testimony make visible the theme of WYD: "Rooted and built up in Christ and established in the faith". The brand for World Youth Day is, in itself, a catechesis, an opportunity of evangelization: the swift and sure way to reach Christ is the Virgin Mary, Mother of God and of men. Young people have, in Mary´s faith, the example and model to reach Christ and fulfill the priority objective of WYD: to make his message known in the world
